16.

“Will you see what you can find on Elonzo who-sucks-at-sports-gambling while I swing by the lab?” Jenna asked outside the door to their office.

“Sure, boss. No problem.” While Jamison entered the office, Jenna strode down the hall to the lab where she found the capable Dr. Asita Gupta busy at a large machine. The scientist, who was as height-challenged as Jenna, glanced up and smiled.

“Good afternoon, Lieutenant Ferrari,” she greeted. “I’m working on some things from your crime scene right now.” Her eyes warmed and sparkled as she sashayed over to the counter where Jenna had posted herself. “How are the wedding plans proceeding? Lots of work, huh? But the fun kind.”

“It’s not going to cost as much as I feared, so that part’s great,” Jenna answered in relief. “And it’s coming together. Hey, you had a wedding, right?”

Dr. Gupta’s grin pulled back far enough to create dimples. “Yes,” bubbled out.

“How did you decide on everything? I mean, the music, flowers, food, bird seeds or bubbles—nobody throws rice anymore—who to sing, what poem to read? There’s so much, it’s overwhelming.”

“To be honest …” Dr. Gupta leaned in, raising a conspiratorial hand to her mouth, and whispered, “My mother did most of the planning. She’s a steamroller, and I wasn’t going to get in her way,” she chuckled. “There’s no right or wrong; just do and have what will make you and your sweetheart happy.”

Jenna nodded. “I guess. So, what have you got?”

“CSI Wilcox collected some DNA samples from the psychic shop. I’m running them now and should have results by tomorrow. I think Marcus is working on a report for you over in prints,” she stated. “Now, CSI Davenport collected a smorgasbord of substances from the floor, and about half have been identified. Shall I shoot you a partial list, or do you want to wait for a complete one?”

Jenna considered. If she got the partial list, something may jump out at her to move on this afternoon, whereas if she waited, she could better prioritize what was pivotal and what was incidental. There was bound to be all kinds of weird stuff on the floor, from snowmelt granules to pigeon poop, none of which might be important.

“I’ll wait,” she concluded. Fishing in her pocket, she pulled out a sealed plastic bag with a labeled vial inside. “Another DNA sample for you to run and compare to any from the scene.”

Dr. Gupta took it from her with a gloved hand. “Thanks. Will do.”

Leaving Dr. Gupta’s lab, Jenna almost ran smack into Jose Marcus in the hallway.

“Woah, Ferrari!” he exclaimed, taking a step back with an embarrassed look. “I didn’t see you there.”

“Where are your glasses?” she demanded.

A blank look overtook his tan face. “I don’t wear glasses.”

Jenna laughed. She loved teasing Marcus, and they often had bets going for which she’d invariably have to pay out empanadas and cannoli. “No sweat. I just stepped out of Dr. Gupta’s.” Spotting a file folder in his hand, she said, “I hope that’s for me.
